Sin Remedio - Border Hoppin' Hardcore

Los Angeles' very own spanish hardcore crust band, Sin Remedio, deliver the goods on their debut full length, Border Hoppin' Hardcore. Blending equal parts crust, hardcore, 80s anarcho, and powerful latino rhythms and vocals set this band apart from the rest of the Los Angeles DIY punk outfits. Very unique and inspiring. I hope ya feel the same!!!

Refused - Songs To Fan The Flames Of Discontent

Refused's 2nd album. Pretty rockin' and a far departure from their first, This Just Might Be The Truth. The song structures, timing, and rapid fire delivery of brutality and riffs set the stage for a sound that redefined Swedish hardcore for their their third release, The Shape Of Punk To Come (a masterpiece, btw). Definitely a must.

Download

And just fer the hell of it, here's their first record. Their sound isn't as developed as their successors, and it's much more "hardcore" than their later releases, but it's a treat nonetheless.

Submission Hold - Sackcloth And Ashes (The Ostritch Dies On Monday)

Another epic work of art from Canadian anarcho punks, Submission Hold. If you're familiar with their work, you know what to expect. If you aren't yet familiar, I suggest you listen to Progress (As If Survival Mattered or Waiting For Another Monkey To Throw The First Brick first, since this album relies heavily on the foundation those two albums previously created. Excellent.

Queens Of The Stone Age - S/T

An interesting take on stoner rock and alternative music. Very creative. Musically, very heavy. Vocally, very light and easy on the ears. Its hard rock with stoner licks, basically, and it delivers the goods (meaning that it goes well with that dubsack you've been hiding in your sock, hippie!). Mexicola is by far my favorite track, but the entire album is quite an experience. Not a band I'd suggest keeping up with. I'd stick to their first two splits and LPs. This one especially.

Grief - Come To Grief

Really, one of the heaviest sludge records in existence. Brutal. Tragic. Might blow your subwoofer. Or your mind.

Download

Crucifix - Dehumanization

From dehumanization, to arms production,
For the benefit of the nation, or its destruction,
Power is power, it's the law of the land,
Those who live for death, would die by their own hands.
Life is no ordeal, if you can come to terms,
Reject the system, which dictates the norm,
From dehumanization, to arms production,
For the benefit of the nation, or its destruction,
It's your choice: PEACE or ANNIHILATION!

Download

Buzzov-en - At A Loss

One of the most depressing sludge bands, ever. At A Loss is Buzzov-en's 3rd album. There's a hilarious E.L.O. cover of "Don't Bring Me Down", but other than that, they don't seem to have much of a sense of humor about anything. Members went on to form Weedeater and Bongzilla.

Download

Melvins - Bullhead

Their third album, Bullhead, I honestly think is just as heavy and great as Ozma. Ozma being the classic, this album I feel is a bit overlooked. Like Ozma, Lori Black, Shirley Temple's daughter, slams the thick strings in this classic Melvins lineup. Drone band Boris got their name from a song on this record. Excellent for fans of early sludge metal and grunge (i know you hate that word.).

Download

High On Fire - The Art Of Self Defense

Debut LP by Ex-Sleep guitarist Matt Pike's band, High On Fire. The Art Of Self Defense is a far departure from the Dopesmoker era of Sleep. Instead, it attacks with a unique and "brutal" approach to the stoner riff when compared to other metal bands of the late 90s (metal was pretty much reduced to maximum suckage by then, with nu-metal being the style of the time. aren't we glad that's over???). Definitely a must for any Sleep fans - although the rhythm section of High On Fire is nowhere near as epic as that of Sleep. A great album, nonetheless.

Download

Yaphet Kotto - The Killer Was In The Government Blankets

This is the first record from Yaphet Kotto. Very emotive, melodic, and punk as fuck. If you were at all into "Syncopated, Synthetic Laments For Love", you'll love this record!!!

Download

Chumbawamba - Revolution

I get knocked down! I can't get enough of this 7''. Crass-style anarcho punk with a bit of a disco rhythm you can dance to (This sound will be further elaborated on in their later releases. This isn't a dance epic, so don't expect it to be). 4 tracks of youthful and passionate punk rock to rock your socks with. Take a risk. I know you hate that one song of theirs, but give this a chance and you'll see what I mean.

Download

Limp Wrist - Discography

Queer-core, straightedge hardcore boys bringing you the finest in sweat your ass off danceable hardcore!! If you ever get the chance to see them live (they rarely play), you're in for the time of your life!!! So, slap on them short shorts and that low cut v-neck tee and crank this shit as loud as humanly possible. Piss off your homophobic neighbors by hardcore dancing in their front yard!!!

Alliaceous - S/T LP & Demo

Pop punk frommeth the family of Contravene. Super catchy, way too cute, and fun fun fun!!! Like Contravene, this band has been on hiatus for a very long time. This is their self-titled LP and their demo - both share much of the same playlist, except the demo has a super goofy cover of Freight Train by Elizabeth Cotten. Yep. Up the porch punx!!!

Download

Contravene - Early Discography

If you've already got the "A Call To Action" LP and the "Prison Sells" EP, by adding this to your collection, you'll have the complete discography from these Arizona anarcho crust lords (there's also a demo tape I haven't heard in years with a Dirt cover, but those songs are on this album, and better quality). Much more raw than their later recordings, but still displaying the amazing musicianship you find in their other records. Omega Tribe and Doom covers. Awesome !!!

Download

Ambition Mission - Discography

Pre-This Is My Fist pop punk to the max!!! This is the complete discography of one of Chicago's finest late 90s punk bands. Dance your ass off to their catchy tunes! There's even a Hickey cover!!! Awesome? Yes. Tell your friends.

Black Flag - My War

Black Flag's 2nd LP. Fucking amazing. The A side sounds a lot like the Damaged years. Good shit.. but the last 3 tracks on the B side are what you should be writing home about. Those doomy, gloomy, Sabbath influenced tracks would go on to influence bands like The Melvins. Play it loud. They do.

$ETH! - Acoustic Rage

So, for all y'all that are into folk punk, here's $ETH!'s first 7'', Acoustic Rage. It's from '93, so it doesn't sound like Against Me! or Defiance, Ohio! or whatever the fuck you're used to (I like them, too. I won't make fun). It's a little more primitive than that. Not as developed. A bit more honest in some ways. I'm posting this 7'' in hopes that someone knows how I can get a hold of his later albums. They have them on Interpunk, but I don't have a credit card, and I won't be at my address for much longer, so that isn't much of an option at the time. The records I speak of are called "The First Snack" and "A Rehearsal For The Great Uprising", the latter being a masterpiece, but both beautiful in their own ways. Any help would be greatly appreciated in finding these:

"The First Snack"

AND

"A Rehearsal For The Great Uprising"

Unfortunately, Seth passed away a few years back, so he wasn't able to continue his project. What could have developed had he lived to go on? His last record came out in 2001, around the same time Against Me!'s early EPs were released. At that time, he had a good 10 or more years under his belt. More than Tom Gabel does now, and he never compromised the integrity of his music. "A Rehearsal For The Great Uprising," in my honest opinion, was his epitaph, and I assure you I will post it as soon as I acquire said recording. And I will. These records meant a lot to me when I was around graduating age in high school, and though I never knew him in his life, I knew his music, and I know how it has influenced me, even to this day.

This is Seth's other band, Garblecrat. I don't know much about them, but they're also very passionate. Somewhat poppy plugged in punk rock, but mostly sounds like $ETH!.

On another note, I'm planning on starting another blog. One for DIY punk bands, demos, friends, ect. Look forward to that in the future.

Om - God Is Good

The latest release from Om. They've stepped it up with the instrumentation on this album with flute, piano, and some probably eastern stringed instruments I can't identify due to my lack of knowledge on the subject. Very complex, but still very Om. Cremation Ghat I is sick. I'm telling you, that bass line won't leave your head for a minute. Om is Good.

Download

Om - Gebel Barkal

This is the first Om release with Emil Amos on drums. Very powerful track. By the 2nd half of the 7'' you'll understand how vital Emil Amos has become to the creation of the music. His hypnotic rolls fused with heavily repetetive beats adds a unique quality to what's already one of the most unique bands to come out of the early 90s stoner metal scene. Excellent!

Download

Om / Six Organs Of Admittance Split

This 7'' really nails it, I'm serious. The Om track almost starts off like air raid sirens on bass. One of their shorter, four and a half minute long tracks, but still delivers in the riff department. The Six Organs Of Admittance track is also pretty sick. I hadn't heard them until I got this split, but in a similar vein as Om, they're mysterious and hypnotic. The vocals are eerie and weird, and the layers of intstruments that don't really seem to be playing in the same, or any key, add something unsettling and scary to their track. Your sub woofers won't stop rumbling until it's over, I swear.

Health Hazard // Suffer - Discography 93 - 96

Health Hazard and Suffer were basically the same band w/ diff vox, so whatever I have to say applies to both for the most part. Again, I picked up this record in High School and I was blown away by the powerful brutality and emotion in the vocals from this Hardcore/Crust band of the early to mid 90s. It's like the bridge between 80's hardcore and 90's crust, but even that description alone doesn't do the band justice. I listen to this, and I feel the anger like a wild beast screaming at me five inches from my face, only breaking for the occasional mosh part or riff-laden breakdown, then chaos all over again. Intense, to say the least.

Saviours - Crucifire

I've already posted a Yaphet Kotto album on this blog, and I'll be putting more up sometime in the near future (more like whenever the fuck I feel like), but I thought you might wanna see what they're up to nowadays. Saviours' record, Crucifire, sounds a lot like early Mastodon meets High On Fire. It's a bit technical, and maybe a tad bit pretentious, but that might be half the appeal here. I still listen to it on a regular basis. I feel like I'm doing something naughty whenever I blare this in my living room, and maybe I should... I hope y'all feel the same. \m/

Submission Hold - Waiting For Another Monkey To Throw The First Brick

D.S. 13 - Vad Vet Vi Om Kriget?

In high school, this record meant so much to me, esp. at a time when I was still familiarizing myself with straightedge hardcore (I'm not sure how many of the band members were straightedge - I guess it doesn't matter). Honest, Fast, and straight to the point, this Swedish hardcore band opened up my musical horizons to a more aggressive form of true punk rock. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did way back when...

Embrace - S/T

This is the only release by post-hardcore band, Embrace. Fronted by Ian Mackaye w/ members of his brother's band, The Faith, this band is considered by many to be one of the first emotive hardcore bands from the mid 80s. Definitely pioneers and ahead of their time. Check it.

Garmonbozia - S/T

Amazing feminist crusty metal band from Minneapolis, MN. Very short-lived band, but amazing nonetheless. Members of Oroku. Cello-tastic!!! Have yerself a taste.

Disrupt - Unrest

One of the best crust albums ever made, in my opinion. Hard-hitting, fast, and mind-blowing. Along with Extreme Noise Terror, these crust lords paved the way for contemporary crust bands to this day. Still, there isn't a good punk show that I go to that I don't see a Disrupt Smash Divisions shirt, so you'd definitely benefit greatly by checking this one out, if you haven't already.

Axiom - Establishing A Culture Of Resistance, Impaled By Chaos, Apathy and Privilege

A whole lotta Axiom for all you Northwest crust lords. The epic riffage is as inspiring as the preachy sermons from these uber anti-civvies from Portland. Members are now in bands such as Resistant Culture and Hellshock.

Subhumans - The Day The Country Died

Epic. Epic. Epic. From beginning to end, this anarcho punk soundtrack to the apocalypse is like that last swill of whiskey that pushes you over the edge to knock society to the fucking ground. It left quite an impression on me when I was a kid, anyway.

Agrimony - Demo

This is a very short-lived band I was in called Agrimony. We were from Southern California, and in our short history, we shared members with such bands as Problem//Reaction//Solution, Krakatoa, Long Pig, Dystopia, 2nd St. Rag Stompers, Against//Empire, and others. I heard this for the first time in almost forever the other day and it brought me to tears how this band could have been fucking amazing! Along with A Century's Claim, this band is the only other band I wish I was still writing music with. Maygun on Violin. Me on Bass. Lucien on Drums. Diana on Vox. Jason on Guitar. I hope you enjoy this partial demo (only 3 of the 5 songs recorded in this session). If anyone has the other songs, Idle Hands and Rewetting Of The Bones, let me know! Rewetting Of The Bones was on a Profane Existence comp a few years ago, but I don't have it anymore... Bummer. Enjoy!!!

Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come

I believe I was in the 8th grade in middle school when this record came out in late 1998. At the time I was listening to a lot of Subhumans, Dead Kennedys, Amebix, and Crass, so getting this record was a far departure from what I was rocking out to at the time (when it came to political music, that is). They definitely have a Swedish hardcore sound going on, definitely, but they've got much more than that. Extremely talented musicians, for sure, which is one of the things that led to the breakup and constant lineup changes before this record came into fruition. This band definitely opened me up to a whole new style of political punk rock and political ideas, and in my opinion, is one of the most important albums of the late 90s (they broke up shortly after the record came out, on tour, in a basement show that the cops busted). There are rumored reunions, and a repress and remaster of this record in the works (3 discs, I believe). Members went on to form Swedish Anarcho-Syndicalist rock band The (International) Noise Conspiracy shortly after the breakup of Refused.

1905 - Voice

If you're into emotive hardcore, folk punk, and anarcho punk, you might need a dose of 1905. It's as if Submission Hold's song structures were a little less random and erratic, they'd sound a lot like this. I dunno. You might have to judge for yourself, but this is the only thing they've ever released, and they're another band that should've put out a few more records before they called it quits...

Diamond Head - Lightning To The Nations

When I heard this record for the first time, it completely ruined early Metallica for me. Now I can't listen to Kill 'Em All without hearing how derivative a record it is... Diamond Head did it first, and did it best. For reals.

GZA - Liquid Swords

You can see this record as a continuation of Wu Tang's 36 Chambers. Liquid Swords build most of its atmosphere from its hard hitting flows and Shogun Assassin samples. This is REAL hip hop, kids. Intelligent as fuck. Ain't no bitches and money on this record. Check it out if you haven't yet.

Yage - And Nobody Told Me To Think About Life In General

This is an early discography of German emotive hardcore band, Yage. Intense, Emotional, Powerful... There are only a few records that get me as pumped as this one does. If you're at all into emotive hardcore, I suggest you get this!

Cattle Decapitation - Homovore

2nd record from vegetarian grindcore masters, Cattle Decapitation. This album is a lot more solid and entertaining than their first record, Human Jerky, and is the last album with Gabe Serbian on guitar. Their later albums, from To Serve Man on, share more in common with technical death metal than the Carcass influenced style this record is known for.

Submission Hold - The Buzz Of A Buzzless Situation & Veterans Of The Cola Wars

These are the first two demos from Submission Hold, released as "Insult To Injury". If you like any of their later stuff, you'll probably dig these demos. Their song structures are a little more like actual "songs", so even if you don't like their later releases, you can probably still dig on this if you're into anarcho. Enjoy!!!

Submission Hold - Progress (As If Survival Mattered)

This band is probably one of my favorite North American anarcho-punk bands ever. They're from Vancouver, BC, and their music is very chaotic and strange. They mix equal elements of early and later Chumbawamba to poetic lyrics (stylistically bordering on the nonsensical at times) and smooth rhythms, only to be immediately broken by piercing screams and Dystopia-like breakdowns, flutes, and European anarcho-punk song structure. Very feminist and very anarchist indeed. One of my favorite political bands of the 90s, for sure.

Regulations - Regulations

This is the 2nd LP and from Sweden's Regulations. Again, much of that 80's American hardcore we all know and love, except this time the band is a little tighter than the first record. So far, this is my favorite recording of theirs, and Police Sirens my favorite song. You'll probably dig it if you like good ole 80's hardcore. Their third record is great as well. I'll be putting that one up soon.

Download

Omega Tribe - Make Tea, Not War

One of my favorite anarcho punk bands, Omega Tribe. This record's got the jamz! Dancy, catchy, and in your face! In some ways, it's very typical of anarcho punk from this era, bordering in disco and dance club influence at times (nowhere near as much as Chumbawamba though), but it stands alone in creativity and passion. Get it!

Download

Ciril - Hysteria Driven

This is the 2nd full length release from So-Cal death punk band, Ciril. This is one of those bands that NEVER leaves So-Cal, but continue to crank out records (mostly splits and 7 inches). They're a lot like early 80's hardcore meets Rudimentary Peni and Christian Death, and they do a Bikini Kill cover on this record! Must have !

Yaphet Kotto - Syncopated Synthetic Laments For Love

Yaphet Kotto's 2nd record. Melodic Anarcho-emotive hardcore from San Fran. This record is very punk, very political, and very intense. The chord progressions, odd timing, and dynamics on this record are amazing, even if you aren't a fan of "screamo" music, you might dig it. It's one of my favorites for sure.
